Darkfield microscopy is used to study transparent unstained samples. Such samples weakly absorb light and are therefore not visible when viewed using brightfield microscopy.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTo use the darkfield condenser, it must be paired with an objective lens whose N.A. (numerical aperture) is less than that of the condenser. The numerical aperture of the oil immersion condenser is 1.36–1.25, so the condenser works with 20x and higher magnification objectives.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe condenser requires the use of immersion oil between the condenser lens and the slide for both dry and immersion objectives. The absence of immersion oil on the condenser lens prevents light rays from reaching the sample.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe darkfield condenser is installed into the microscope body, replacing the Abbe condenser.
