One of the biggest obstacles to night sky exploration is the glow of the night sky from artificial lights, such as streetlights. The night sky is not very dark in the vicinity of towns or cities, which reduces the visibility of objects beyond the enormous solar system. Depending on the type of celestial object it is possible to increase the contrast drastically by blocking annoying artificial light.

The Explore Scientific UHC filter uses a characteristic property of artificial lighting. Streetlights and lamps glow in special colors - the typical colors of high pressure or mercury lamps. The Explore Scientific CLS nebula filter blocks these colors and therefore increases contrast - light from celestial objects can pass through the filter.

The results are surprising: objects are suddenly visible in places that were previously completely empty without filters. In peripheral skies, for example, the large galaxy M101, the Veil Nebula Ngc 6992 or even the bright Dumbell Nebula M27 may not be clearly visible.
