2026 Solar Eclipse: a major astronomical event in Spain
For the first time since 1999, a total solar eclipse will occur again in Central Europe in 2026. The moment will arrive on the afternoon of August 12. It will reach inhabited areas in western Iceland in the afternoon. The black sun will be visible for barely a minute over the capital, Reykjavik; shortly after, the legendary Snæfellsjökull volcano will appear in the twilight. The path will continue over the Atlantic to touch down again in northern Spain late in the afternoon. The shadow of the total phase will cross Spain in about four minutes, and the cities of Bilbao, Valladolid, Valencia, and Palma de Mallorca are in the central zone, being also fully observable for 1 minute from different cities in Catalonia such as Tarragona, Salou, Cambrils, Reus and Vilanova i la Geltrú, the latter with barely 10s duration. In many other European countries, the partial solar eclipse, with more than 80% of the sun covered by the moon, will be an absolutely stunning experience. Already in 2027, another total solar eclipse will take place in Spain. And in 2028, sun observers in Europe will be able to enjoy an annular solar eclipse.
The Sun: always worth observing!
Even regardless of whether there is a solar eclipse, with Omegon Solar Safe solar eclipse glasses you can observe the sun safely. With a little luck, you may see, for example, larger sunspots or birds or planes passing in front of the sun. In general, rare transits of planets such as Mercury can also be sighted.
