Observe comet 12P/Pons-Brooks from Spain!

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks, nicknamed "the devil's comet", is back in our night sky and offers a unique opportunity to observe it from Spain.

When can it be seen?

The comet will be visible with beginner telescopes and binoculars during March and April 2024 , reaching its maximum brightness in late April .

Where you can see?

The comet can be observed in the northern hemisphere , even better in places with little light pollution. To find it, you can follow these steps:

1. Find a place with a dark sky: Get away from the city lights and find a place with a clear horizon.

2. Locate the constellation according to the position of the comet: from March 8 to 15, the comet passes through the constellation of Andromeda. From 16 to 22 it can be found in the constellation of Pisces. The comet will enter Aries starting on March 30, reaching a magnitude of 5.19, which will make it visible to the naked eye in locations with low light pollution.

You can use an astronomy app like Sky Map or Stellarium to help you find it.

3. Look for the comet: The comet will appear as a diffuse spot of light, similar to a faint star. You can use binoculars or a telescope to get a better view.

The best time to see it is just after sunset. It will be extremely difficult to see it at the end of April, which is why we recommend that you do it even in March with the help of a telescope or binoculars.

Tips for better observation:

  • Use binoculars or a telescope: They will allow you to get a more detailed view of the comet.

Buy telescope

  • Wait until the Moon is in its waning phase: Moonlight can make it difficult to observe the comet.
  • Dress in warm clothing: Nights in March and April can be cold.
