The collimator eyepiece is not an eyepiece in the strict sense of the word . It is a mechanical accessory that fits into the focuser of the refractor or Newtonian telescopes, and is used to collimate, that is, to align the optics so that they collect light correctly . This procedure can be performed at night on a star (but the technique is not simple) or during the day using a collimation eyepiece.

For reflecting telescopes:

The technique used with the collimating eyepiece is simple for Newtonian telescopes: by pointing at a uniformly illuminated surface and observing the position of the reflections of the primary and secondary mirrors relative to each other , it is possible to correctly align the mirrors with each other. The eyepiece is usually placed right on the optical axis of the instrument and, thanks to its reflective inner surface, indicates the position of the focuser in the different reflections.

For refracting telescopes:

To collimate a telescope, you must first cover the objective with an opaque cap to prevent any light reflection. Then it is necessary to place the collimation eyepiece and introduce a light source through the side hole of this eyepiece. Looking through the eyepiece of the eyepiece you will see the collimation discs reflected in the objective. Therefore, it will be enough to overlap the discs using the collimation screws to have only one.
