Celestron has reinvented the handheld telescope with StarSense Explorer, the first telescope that uses your smartphone to analyze the night sky and calculate your position in real time. StarSense Explorer is ideal for beginners thanks to the app's easy-to-use interface and detailed tutorials. It's like having your own personal night sky tour guide.

Attach , Start , Explore.

Leave behind complicated star charts, imprecise planetarium applications, and computerized mounts. With StarSense Explorer, locating objects has never been easier, faster or more accurate. Within minutes of setting up the telescope, you'll be navigating the sky with confidence. Simply place your phone on the exclusive StarSense dock and launch the StarSense Explorer app. After aligning your phone with the telescope's optics (a quick 2-minute procedure), StarSense Explorer generates a list of currently visible celestial objects. Have your selection and arrows appear on the screen, guiding you as you move the telescope. When the object is ready to view, the bullseye turns green.

Samartphone compatibility.

StarSense Explorer works with most modern smartphones, including iPhone 6 or later, and most devices running Android 7.1.2 or later, manufactured since 2016. For a complete compatibility list, click here.

Patent-pending StarSense sky recognition technology.

StarSense Explorer uses patent-pending technology. So your smartphone can determine exactly where the telescope is pointing in the night sky. A Loss in Space Algorithm (LISA), like those used by orbiting satellites to reorient themselves correctly, helps the app match the star patterns it detects in its internal database.

While other astronomy apps may claim to help you find objects, they rely exclusively on the phone's gyroscopes and accelerometers, which are not as accurate as LISA technology. No other app can tell you precisely when your target is visible in the eyepiece.

High quality Altazimuthal mount, with slow motion control.

An ultra-stable altazimuth mount provides a solid foundation for StarSense Explorer DX. Sliding clutches and fine motion controls oriented on both axes help you move the telescope smoothly and zero in on your target. As celestial objects appear to move across the night sky, you'll be able to follow them by simply turning the knobs. Everything is anchored by a full-height adjustable tripod.

Dazzling views with high quality optics.

With a large 125mm objective, this telescope has enough light-gathering power to highlight impressive details in celestial objects. You can expect bright, clear views of Jupiter's four Galilean moons, its cloud bands and Great Red Spot, Saturn's rings, the trapezoid in the Orion Nebula, and the beautiful Pleaides Open Star Cluster.

Perfect for the city or dark sky sites.

Even if you live in a city with light pollution, StarSense Explorer is advanced enough to be able to choose Jupiter, Saturn, Venus, the Orion Nebula, double stars and some more of the most famous celestial objects.

But if you can take the telescope to an even darker location, more objects will be seen.

The complete telescope kit weighs only 6.87 kilograms, making it perfectly portable and easy to take on your next camping trip, or to a remote viewing location.

Everything you need to observe right away.

When you unpack your new StarSense Explorer DX, you will find:

  • 125 mm (5”) SC XLT optical tube
  • StarSense dock for your smartphone
  • Low power (25 mm) and high power (10 mm) eyepiece and 90° prism.
  • StarPointer red dot finder, perfect for using the telescope during the day or without the StarSense Explorer app
  • Altazimuthal mount with fine motion control.
  • Full height tripod with an accessory tray to keep you organized.
