Total Solar Eclipse in Catalonia on August 12, 2026: Complete Observation Guide
A Historic Event Visible from Catalonia
Next August 12, 2026, Catalonia will be the setting for one of the most important astronomical events of recent decades: a total solar eclipse visible from many towns in Spain, including some in Catalonia.
This is an exceptional opportunity, as total eclipses visible from the same region are infrequent. For a few minutes or seconds, depending on the location, day will turn into night, and it will be possible to observe one of nature's most impressive spectacles.
The path of totality will cross Catalonia from west to east but will not affect the entire territory equally.
✅ Recommended areas with total eclipse
The total solar eclipse will not be the same in all areas. For example, in the city of Tarragona, a total solar eclipse will be visible for approximately 1 minute. In border towns, the duration is limited to 10 seconds.
The most recommended towns are:
- Alcanar, with a duration of 1 minute and 37 seconds
- Amposta, with a duration of 1 minute and 34 seconds
- L'Aldea, with a duration of 1 minute and 32 seconds,
- L'Atmetlla de Mar, with a duration of 1 minute and 25 seconds
- Cambrils, with a duration of 1 minute and 10 seconds
- Salou, with a duration of 1 minute and 7 seconds
- Reus, with a duration of 1 minute and 2 seconds
- Tarragona, with a duration of 1 minute.
The approximate start time of the eclipse is 7:35 PM.
On the map of Catalonia below, we can observe the path of the total solar eclipse. The previously recommended cities are closer to the center of the path.

⚠️ Areas near the limit
The city of Vilanova i la Geltrú, capital of the Garraf region, is the limit area for observing the total eclipse. In this town, observers will be able to enjoy 10 seconds of total darkness.
Other inland cities located in the regions of Baix Penedès, Alt Camp, Conca de Barberà, Garrigues, Urgell, Pla d'Urgell, and Segrià will also be able to appreciate it for a brief moment.
In the interactive map below, you can enter the name of a city from anywhere in the territory to see a simulation of the eclipse in that location:

What happens during a total eclipse?
A total eclipse occurs when the Moon completely covers the Sun from our perspective.
During totality:
- The sky darkens as at dusk
- The solar corona appears, invisible under normal conditions
- Phenomena such as the diamond ring are observed
- The temperature drops slightly
It's a unique experience even for experienced observers.
Phases of the eclipse
The event unfolds in several phases:
- Start (partial): the Moon begins to cover the Sun
- Totality: the Sun is completely hidden
- Exit from totality
- End of eclipse

The duration of totality will depend on the location, remembering that it is longer the closer you are to the center of the path.
Safety: essential
Observing the Sun without adequate protection can cause irreversible eye damage.
✔️ Safe methods:
- Certified eclipse glasses (ISO 12312-2)
- Premium Reusable Solar Eclipse Glasses
